How to Get Away with Murder: Wes is the Father of Laurel's Baby (2024)

(This post contains spoilers for the midseason finale ofHow to Get Away with Murder)

The verdict finally came down on the DNA test for Laurel's (Karla Souza) newborn baby, which means we finally know whether Frank (Charlie Weber) or Wes (Alfred Enoch) is the father.

Frank... you are not the father.

On top of that crazy reveal, we got a lot of information in this episode. Laurel suffers from bipolar disorder, Simon (Behzad Dabu) survived surgery so he's not dead (yet), Laurel's father has taken custody of her baby, the hard drive containing all his illegal dealings has gone missing, and perhaps craziest of all, Wes left a voicemail on Dominick's (Nicholas Gonzalez) phone the day he died using his given name, Christoph.

Oh yeah, speaking of Dominick... that dude's dead. Thanks, Frank.

TV Guide spoke to Charlie Weber about this deluge of new information and how it will affect Frank moving forward -- especially that baby bomb.

How is Frank going to deal with the revelation that he's not the father of Laurel's baby?
Charlie Weber:
I think that it was a really brilliant choice on their part, to be honest. I think there's something really poetic and intriguing and layered about it not being his baby and to see him still care and want to be there and want to help her through all this with the baby and be there in whatever capacity she allows him to. I think there's something really, really interesting about him wanting to do this despite the fact that it's not his biological baby.

Frank killed Dominick. WHY is his go-to always murder?!
Weber:
You know, that one got away from him. He was going to kill Dominick, but he was unable to get the information he needed. He probably would have killed him a little softer instead of breaking his neck. Passion took over and Frank -- that got away from him a little bit... Frank's one to think ahead and take precautions, certainly with a man like Dominick being connected to who he was connected to, Frank was going to have to kill him. He probably would have been a little more gentle about it had he got the information he needed.

Gentle murder. Much better.
Weber:
That was a little sloppy for him [Laughs]. Here we are in Season 4 and somebody asked me how many people Frank had killed, and I actually had to stop and count.

Can we expect some pretty nasty fallout from that murder, both from Laurel and from Jorge (Esai Morales)?
Weber: You know, the people in the know, they're not happy but I think something that is kind of interesting about the relationships at this point is that no one's surprised. Like, Laurel and Annalise (Viola Davis) are not surprised to find this out. They're not happy with me, but again it's not this devastating, "Oh dear God, you've killed someone!" People get killed around us enough that I don't think there's going to be too much fallout from that itself. Now, her father, however, if he finds that out, there could be problems. We'll have to see.

We got to see Frank and Annalise team up more than we have in a long time in this episode. Is is gratifying for him, being sort of back on Team Annalise?
Weber:
Very. Very much so. To her credit, despite any ill feelings she still has -- you know, Annalise, Frank and Bonnie have their little fallouts, but at the end of the day, they all know that they can't exist without the other ones. Those three people have to exist simultaneously to get through life.

Laurels' bipolar disorder was another huge reveal for Frank, is that going to change his perception of her or their relationship moving forward?
Weber:
He is so blindly going forward with this with her that I don't think so. I think if anything, it's only got to be one more thing he'll want to be there to help with. I would say that would be his only reaction. This is something else that he now needs to find a way to help. His mindset is so on Laurel.

Do you think a rekindling of their romance is on the horizon for Frank and Laurel?
Weber:
Given their past I think they fall in and out of love. I think they've always sort of been in love with each other. You know, I think there's always a chance when two people have those sort of deep-rooted feelings for each other.

What the heck is going on with Dominick's voicemail from Wes? Is Frank going to tell Laurel about it?
Weber:
I mean, he certainly doesn't want to, but he might have to. It's so mysterious, and... Frank has so many things he needs to piece together before he starts bringing people in on any sort of plan or any sort of information. He holds those pieces of information pretty close to his chest because they're very valuable. He will not tell anyone he absolutely does not have to.

Even Annalise?
Weber: He's even kind of keeping things from Annalise. It's almost to protect her, which is another reason he tries not to tell everybody everything, it's because he tries to keep everybody out of trouble by not bringing them into information like that.
