Black-Owned Telecoms Firm Seals Best Buy Deal With Eco-Friendly Phone Case - UrbanGeekz (2024)

A Texas-based telecoms company has launched the first-ever eco-friendly premium phone case rangethat has zero impact on the environment.

Pivet Communications rolled out the groundbreaking invention to coincide with the launch of iPhone 12. The sustainable product line guarantees zero waste, without any compromise to design, lifespan, and functionality.

Michael Pratt, the founder of Pivet, coined the term ‘self-cycle’ to describe the innovative technology. If you don’t recycle, the Pivet case will simply self-cycle itself. With the help of a unique chemical formula, the plastic is 100% ‘bio-available’ to natures decaying agents.

“Essentially your phone case has an expiration date,” says Pratt, who has 15 years plus experience in the consumer electronics industry. “It becomes a perishable good once specific external triggers are activated in a microbe-rich environment such as a landfill site.”

Significantly, the Pivet phone cases do not have a limited shelf life. Biodegradation is only activated in a landfill environment allowing consumers to enjoy full use of their plastic products before disposal.

Disruptive Self-Cycle Technology Bypasses Recycling

Pratt and his team were very much focused on creating a high-quality product without any compromise to user experience, either through case design or functionality. Without any change in the case, Pivet’s self-cycle technology utilizes an exclusive chemical formula called ‘Toto-toa’.These enhanced materials blended within the case make the plastic bio-friendly to natures decaying agents found in areas such as landfills.

This means when you are finished with your case, even if recycling is not an option, all you do is drop the case in the trash and self-cycle technology will do the rest. Everything’s consumed by nature, leaving no footprint.

“Once your case is at the end of its lifespan, meaning it’s been discarded or thrown away, then the Toto-toa material will be activated once the product receives a certain amount of heat and moisture. Pivet searched for a ‘guilt-free’ solution, and they found it with self-cycle technology.”

The new product line boosts three distinct lines:the ultra-thin Pivet Zero, the everyday protection case Aspect, and Sentri, one of the most advanced protective cases on the market. In Pivet’s exclusive deal Aspect is available online and in stores at Best Buy – the largest consumer electronics dealer in the United States. “Aspect is the first and only clear case on the market that’s 100% biodegradable,” adds Pratt.

“Expect to see many more items produced by Black entrepreneurs and business people like Michael Pratt, who founded Pivet,” says a Best Buy spokesperson. “The goal is to add it to the growing list of ways we commit to being part of the change we all increasingly seek.”

Pivet’s latest disruptive innovation comes amid increasing alarm over the magnitude of plastic waste. If present trends continue, by 2050, there will be 12 billion metric tons of plastic in landfills, according to data from a National Geographic report.

In the U.S. the average individual produces 3,700 bottles of plastic waste each year. And despite ongoing feel-good projects urging the public to reuse or recycle, only a fraction of the plastic produced actually winds up getting recycled.

Pivet Is Tackling The 90% Plastic Problem

“Americans only recycle 10% of the plastics they consume,” said Pratt. “A staggering 90% of the plastic we touch and use every day goes into landfills, litter, or ends up in our oceans as trash.”

Pivet is focused on the 90% landfill issue, with the goal of making their sustainable products “bio-friendly” to the environment.

“Everyone else in the market is working on the 10%. Pivet looked at the problem from another perspective. The problem with plastic isn’t plastic. It’s what do we do with it when we’re done with single-use plastic items. Once you answer what you do with plastic at the end-of-life cycle you solve the plastic issue. If we work with nature we will win.”

Indeed, with the skyrocketing growth of cell phone usage and their associated accessories, Pivet has the potential to solve plastic pollution on a global scale. There may even be scope to utilize their exclusive formulae on other plastic bases.

Can Toto-toa be used in other plastic products?

“Absolutely. What we have formulated is an additive that survives a specific life cycle, the life cycle of mobile accessories. The recipe would have to be changed so it could work with other products. The sky is the limit, so you best believe we are looking at other applications.”

Pratt’s creation follows a long history of African-American inventors in the United States. Trailblazing innovators such as Garrett Morgan (creator of the three-light traffic light, 1923), Marie Van Brittan Brown (home security system, 1966), and Mark Dean (co-creator of the IBM personal computer, 1981) who all made groundbreaking contributions to modern-day advancements.

At its core, Pivet introduces innovative and sometimes never-before-seen tech products to store shelves. “Like all African Americans, I come from a culture that is historically connected with the earth,” said Pratt. “So as Pivet develops disruptive tech, it’s important that what we create is kind to the environment. I’m also a father. I have three young children. If I don’t do something, then shame on me to leave the planet in a mess for them.”

Launched in 2018, Pivet Communications is a relatively new start with big goals. Headquartered in Austin, Texas, the firm has design, logistics, engineering, and manufacturing bases across the globe. The company’s mission is to create products and messaging that disrupts and pivots the consumer electronics industry with new technologies, new products, and new ways of doing business. Pivet’s ‘self-cycle’ technology truly has the potential to shake up the plastics industry.
